Description

A crunchy and cheesy air-fried blooming onion that captures the essence of a restaurant appetizer without the guilt of deep frying.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium onions
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  1. 1. Peel the onions and slice off the top; cut vertically, leaving 1/2 inch uncut at the bottom.
  2. 2. Gently pull apart the layers to create the bloom shape, soak in ice water for 10 minutes, then pat dry.
  3. 3. Mix the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper in a shallow bowl.
  4. 4. Whisk egg and buttermilk in a separate bowl.
  5. 5. Combine panko breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan in a third bowl.
  6. 6. Coat each onion in the flour mixture, then dip in the egg mixture, and coat with breadcrumbs.
  7. 7. Preheat the air fryer to 375°F and spray the basket with cooking spray.
  8. 8. Place the onions in the basket without touching each other and spray tops with cooking spray.
  9. 9. Air fry for 15-18 minutes until golden brown and crispy, flipping or spraying with oil halfway through.
