German Potato Dumplings

Description

Soft, pillowy dumplings made from mashed potatoes, flour, and egg, served warm with butter and parsley.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg
  • Salt to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg (optional)
  • Butter for serving
  • Chopped parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. 1. Boil the peeled and cubed potatoes in salted water until tender, about 15–20 minutes.
  2. 2. Drain and let cool slightly.
  3. 3. Mash the potatoes until smooth.
  4. 4. In a large bowl, combine the mashed potatoes, flour, egg, salt, and nutmeg to form a dough.
  5. 5. Divide the dough into equal pieces and shape them into balls.
  6. 6. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil.
  7. 7. Carefully drop the dumplings into the boiling water and cook until they float to the surface, about 5–7 minutes.
  8. 8. Remove the dumplings with a slotted spoon and let them drain.
  9. 9. Serve warm topped with melted butter and chopped parsley, if desired.
